Family, Fellowship, Frisbee

  • by

On February 26, 2017, Grace Klein Community hosted its first ever #HopeHuck Ultimate Frisbee tournament fundraiser. Four teams came together of all ages and experience levels to raise funds for families in need, enjoy a delicious lunch together, and participate in some friendly competition on the Frisbee field. One team consisted of players from the University of Alabama Ultimate Frisbee team, one team from our friends at Interlinc, and two consisted of players from the local Birmingham Ultimate Disc Association, with one including leaders of Grace Klein Community alongside them.

Many generous donations were given, food was delicious, but what made this tournament such a success was the moments of connection and fellowship between each team. When you see the University of Alabama ultimate Frisbee team invite the young child of missionaries, who recently arrived from India, to play on their team and see him smiling from ear to ear, as they celebrate with him over scoring, you see God’s love in the special memories being made. When you see a father throw a score to his son (we had two teams with father-son duos) you know that you might be witnessing some cherished family memories. New friendships were formed as experienced ultimate players taught those who had never played or even seen Ultimate Frisbee. Everyone gathered around at the skills challenge and cheered each other on with fervor. As we packed up to leave, you could see encouragement in every player’s eyes, and even in the spectators! Children left with Frisbees in their hands, and adults with gift cards from generous sponsors.

God used this time to form some special new bonds, and enhance others already formed. He used it to give many new players some fun memories, and who knows, maybe even inspire a few to a new hobby. He used it to connect some experienced players to each other, to form friendships that might never have been developed had the decision to attend the tournament not been made. Finally, He used it to offer an opportunity for friends and families to give of their plenty, to provide for those with few.

We are so thankful for every volunteer who invested their time to make this possible, every sponsor that gave generously to allow our players to go home with special treats, and to every player for coming out, encouraging each other, playing with sportsmanship, and helping us feed families in need in the local Birmingham area. God used you all in such a huge way, to provide special memories and friendships, and provide food and hope to families in need.
