Quite Unexpectedly

If you are famous, you don’t have to tell everybody or let it define you. Famous isn’t what makes your heart feel peace nor does it give you the courage to trust. Famous isn’t an identity, an ideal, or a goal to achieve. Famous changes nothing about who God is, how much He adores you or His plans for you. Famous never has the last word.

IMG_2446Maybe that’s why Giorgio Fareria never mentioned that time his Sonic video went viral, or the time he was on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, or that time he was on her show AGAIN, or that music tour he had around the country. Maybe Giorgio kept quiet because famous was never what mattered to Giorgio.

He shared the other day about waking up to 17 texts, explaining that his Sonic video was going viral, and how he went and looked on YouTube and dismissed it that something was wrong. But then it wasn’t, it really was viral and on the main news stations and in famous articles. And that was the day he woke up famous. Quite unexpectedly.

He explained the adventure with Ellen and how he had made this silly bet with a friend that was moving to LA, that he bet he would be famous first. And he met his friend at the LA airport when his friend flew in, because Giorgio was already there and on his way to appear on the Ellen Show. He took his friend to the set with him. What a good way to share the fact that he won the bet. Ha.

But it was never about the bet, or the video that went viral, or the appearance on the 2011 television show. Because if it had been about being famous, he would have worked that deal, stayed in the spotlight, and probably wouldn’t be in Birmingham, AL, in 2016.

IMG_7693Giorgio loves Jesus. He plays in a local church gathering on Sundays. He helps lead worship at our weekly Monday gathering and at Taco Wednesdays. He has been spotted leading worship in parks, coffee houses and friend’s houses. The dude’s heart is made for worship and to facilitate others into worship.

A few months back a friend was grieving and needed some music therapy. Giorgio and another community friend met with this friend and asked her loads of questions about what the Lord had been teaching her, the scripture, the emotion and he wrote a song for her to hold on when her faith feels shaking. Somebody somewhere probably charges for that kind of counseling and healing through music therapy.

GiorgioBarista by trade, Giorgio is often working at one of our local coffee shops in town. Go meet him when you stop by Seeds Coffee for a cup of Joe or for a little quiet in the middle of your noisy day. He will make you a yummy latte and ask you how you are doing.

Or maybe you will meet him at monthly food delivery. When he’s not working, he will be there to help move food boxes and delivery them. Or he will be one of the folks in our prep crew who came to the office to prepare the boxes before delivery day. Or help with a late night food rescue pickup and you may meet him there on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday night.

Giorgio uses his gift for Jesus, he does not hold back, but gives willingly, generously and sacrificially. He isn’t one of those who give from compulsion, rather he is a cheerful giver. Maybe the point of his adventure with famous was to give him a grand platform on giving his life to make Jesus famous. He’s practicing the all hidden in Christ stuff, working on self-discipline, strengthening work ethic and even recording some songs in a local studio. He acknowledges the gift and wants to use it well for Jesus, not for Giorgio, and that’s what makes us all better.

IMG_1472“Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” – 2 Corinthians 9:7

Be praying for one of our famous community members, that he will obey quickly the calling God has on his life, that he will give with reckless abandon trusting our Father who is faithful, that God will keep giving him more music that takes worshipers to the throne of Jesus and that we will all encourage him to use his moments wisely. Daylight is burning. It is enough that the God of the universe know your name, so use your gift for His Glory.
