As we think about the past year, who served us? Who served our kids? If we live in a city, sanitation workers likely picked up our trash once or twice a week. If we went through a drive thru, someone prepared our food and handed it to us through an open window without us having to leave the cozy of our car. If our children went to school, they were served by teachers, lunchroom workers and janitors. At least five days a week, we can go to our mailbox and find our mail thanks to mailmen and mailwomen who stuff those envelopes in that box for us. If we came upon an accident this year, a police officer helped us maneuver safely through the confusion or if our cat got caught in the big oak tree, in our front yard, the firemen came to our rescue. We all used at least one public restroom at a gas station, hotel or office building sometime this year and now we remember someone graciously came before us to clean it and after us to clean it again.
