Samford Students Say YES to Food Rescue

  • by

100 new food rescue heroes to Feed BHM! A huge THANK YOU to Samford University professors Dr. Lovejoy of Samford University Howard College of Arts and Sciences and Professor Newberry, along with their amazing students

Mia Moses, Samford University Communication Sciences and Disorders Student, and Maggie Morrison, Serve Team and Volunteer Coordinator Assistant, rescuing flowers

These two incredible professors partnered with Grace Klein Community to offer students extra credit for completing a food rescue.

Denver Waltman, Samford University History Major, rescuing bread and drinks

In these two professors’ classes, over 100 students became new food rescue heroes and engaged with our mission, contributing to 311 completed rescues

Tonya, Professor Newberry’s Student, and Grace Milligan, GKC Sustainability Liaison and committee member of Sustainability at Samford University, rescuing boxes

From a few of the new student rescuers:

“This opportunity wasn’t just about extra credit—it was about connecting with others and contributing to something meaningful”

“I would like to become a food rescuer on a regular basis”

“My food rescue went smoothly! Thanks so much!”

“It is amazing to see how small efforts like rescuing food can make a big difference in our community. I’m proud to be a part!”

Professor Newberry added, “I had multiple students say they never would have done it, if not for the bonus points, but now want to serve because they loved doing it”

Connor Morgan, GKC Business Development Intern from Samford University Brock School of Business

To all educators in the Greater Burmingham Area: imagine the impact we can make together! Consider offering your high school or college students’ extra credit “with a mission.”

Together, we can save food from landfills, feed people in need, foster hope and love, and help students earn extra credit in the process
