Many of the most memorable events of the Bible take place around a well. Moses met his wife as he rested at the well where she drew water. Jesus first revealed His divinity to a Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well. Metaphors on the life-giving value of water abound. Sure, it’s easy to see that stories full of shepherds in the desert might center around wells and water, but therein lies the beauty of Scripture: God often uses what is most familiar to describe Himself.

There aren’t many wells here in Birmingham. In other parts of the world, a working well that produces clean water can mean the difference between life and death. Rural Andhra Pradesh, India, is an arid place with scorching heat for most of the year. Sources of constantly-flowing, clean water can be a life-sustaining resource.

Each May in Daburuvaripalli, in the heart of Andhra Pradesh’s arid countryside, Nathaniel and Pastor Chandra lead an annual conference called “Five Festival Days with Jesus.” The goal of the meeting is to train young men and women to take the hope of Jesus into the villages of the surrounding region. Attendees pay their own way and often sleep on the concrete floor of the church building. With no facilities or water at the site, conditions are tough. If there were a well on the site, the nearby villagers could benefit daily from the water, and festival attendees could be on-site for longer periods of time. The well would be a beautiful illustration of Jesus’ words in John 7. While being refreshed by the water from the well, the people of the church and nearby village will hear of Jesus’ well of living water that never runs dry.
