When you wonder how the pallets were broken for the encouragement slats, the property line of the community house was cleared with a machete, or a picnic was planned at the local park, the prime suspect may be Andrew Varvoutis.
Andrew and his family have served with Grace Klein Community for many years and most of his service is sneaky, gotta wonder who got this accomplished, kind of love. We are all better together for having Andrew as a leader in our community.
If you come to camping week in May, you may find him leading the entire group in an exercise routine, the first to dive in to the community “gutter banana split” or catch him canoeing some kids that have never been in a canoe before. He may be the one teaching the boys to split wood, rocking a baby to sleep, hauling out the fifth load of trash, praying with some friends or sharing another story of God’s faithfulness.
Come to food delivery the third Saturday of the month and you will find him there. He will be loading boxes for other families, asking everyone how they are doing or praying with a ‘first time’ family. He may be the one chasing the runaway apple down the street, carrying around a live chicken for kids to pet or taking extra routes to delivery for the family who called in sick. Other months, if you listen close, he’s the one heart broken for a family he cares about so much, making noise to help a single mom pay her bills or fighting in the trenches for a kid that has all the potential. Check out the food box letter too, he may have written it.
On Monday night at prayer group, he may be the one begging God for the salvation of a new friend or sharing some breakthrough God did in the heart of someone we all love. He is the one eating all the healthy food, spoonfuls of peanut butter, or brewing the coffee.
When you hear about the family that is begging God for provision, he may be the one helping. He’s probably one of the one’s praying. And he’s surely making noise to engage more people in the opportunity to give to something bigger than themselves. He’s the one telling everyone about our friend’s new business, making another new friend at the gym and recruiting another family to give their lives in ‘hands-on’ ways.
When you wonder how to have favor with any person, how to be best friend’s with the richest of rich and the poorest of poor, take classes from Andrew. He has this God given ability to relate to any person in a deep, intentional way. Whether the person is a theologian or a drug addict, he has the Jesus ability to love them equally, respect them mutually and pursue them passionately. We are better for living life with Andrew.
