“I want to pray for you…put your hands out…repeat after me…say it like you mean it…believe what you’re saying…receive what God is giving you…stop worrying…you are accepted…you are loved…I have been praying for you since before you came to Grace Klein Community…you are supposed to be here…”
These words spoken to and over me by Mary Elizabeth Minderhout go through my mind often. Her words of affirmation and encouragement help carry me through struggles she isn’t even aware of. The first time she prayed over me was amazing and almost scary at the same time. How can she know so much about me and my struggles having just met me?! The answer I have come up with after spending more time with her and observing her with others…Mary Elizabeth is in tune with the Holy Spirit in a very unique and rare way. She listens and responds to Him. She trusts God with a child-like trust and it is so beautiful.
Matthew 18:3 says, “Then He said, ‘I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven.’”
And Luke 18:17, “I tell you the truth, anyone who doesn’t receive the Kingdom of God like a child will never enter it.”
I’m no Bible scholar, but I understand these words to mean we trust and love the Lord like we did our parents when we were young and innocent; when we were still oblivious to the pain, violence, and burdens of this world and our parents were super heroes. We looked to them for protection and provision and loved them with pure hearts. The most amazing thing to me about her childlike faith, is that she has experienced hurt beyond what I can imagine and yet trusts God like a child. I’ve seen Mary Elizabeth speak directly to God. Her face becomes like that of a child and she isn’t afraid to ask Him for anything. She will even stop in mid-sentence with me to turn to Him and either tell or ask him something. You will never have her undivided attention because Jesus has priority in her heart and mind and it shows. She loves Him with a pure love.
Mary Elizabeth comes to GKC often to volunteer and do whatever needs to be done. She brings her sons and they all pitch in. If you have been here on a Tuesday afternoon, you have probably met her. She keeps the GKC Trade Market open until 6pm on Tuesdays. Yes, I am thankful for her service and devotion to Grace Klein Community. I can’t say enough about the work she puts in here. We are blessed to have her volunteer her time and I would never downplay her service, but the real blessing comes in just meeting her, listening to her, observing her, and allowing her to pray over you. If you have been on the receiving end of her prayers then you know what I mean.
God has revealed Himself to me through Mary Elizabeth. She is one of the most beautiful women I have ever met. Spending time with her gives me a sense of being in God’s presence. I have a lot to learn about God, trust, and faith. Mary Elizabeth is a good teacher, sister, mom, friend, and servant. When I speak so highly of her, I’m really praising God for all she is. I know she would want God to receive all the glory. He made her. He brought her through past trials and hardship and continues to carry her through the present ones. He made her who she is today. Come on a Tuesday afternoon and meet her. When you do, ask her to pray over you and then BELIEVE and RECEIVE!” – Amaris Joy
