Bridging Gaps, Building Community

  • by

Laura Tate, a dedicated intern pursuing her Master’s in Public Health, conducted an insightful survey to evaluate community engagement as one of her projects with Grace Klein Community (GKC). Having volunteered and served with GKC since early 2024, Laura brought a deep understanding of the organization’s mission to her work. Her survey focused on identifying service gaps, increasing participation—especially among low socioeconomic status populations—and strengthening collaboration with other service providers.

Survey Overview

Laura designed and distributed the survey both in print and online, engaging individuals already connected to GKC, primarily through two monthly drive-thru locations in low-income neighborhoods. While there was lots of engagement, a total of 69 respondents fully completed the survey, providing valuable insights into community needs.

Key Findings from Laura’s Research

  1. Demographics
    • Majority female respondents, with only 15 males participating
    • Median age: 52 years (range: 23–82 years)
    • Volunteer Status: Only 11 respondents had volunteered (4 in the past, 7 currently)
  2. Service Utilization
    • 45.2% of respondents had only recently (within 3 months) begun receiving GKC services
    • 66% of service users visited the Bessemer Pop-Up, making it the most utilized location
    • Many clients received services from multiple locations, with crossover between Jeff-Co Pop-Up and Bessemer being the most common
  3. Awareness & Requests for Additional Services
    • Some respondents were unaware of all the services GKC offers
    • Frequently requested services (one which GKC already provides i.e., clothing):
      • Clothing and hygiene assistance (adult diapers, school haircuts, med supplies)
      • Transportation solutions (ride shares, locations closer to certain communities)
      • Social and emotional support programs (grief counseling, job skills training, ESL classes)
  4. Program Interest
    • Most popular programs:
      • Community Events
      • Bible Study
      • Life Groups
      • Cooking Classes
    • Least interest: Mission Immersion Programs, such as sustainability and field trips, though these may be appealing to targeted groups
  5. Community Suggestions for Future Initiatives
    • Stronger partnerships with local schools for student service opportunities
    • Youth-focused programs, including paid internships, etiquette classes, and sports fee assistance
    • Adult-focused engagement, such as senior programs and adult sports leagues

Laura’s Lasting Contribution

Thanks to Laura’s research, GKC now has a more clearer picture of community needs and interests. Her findings will help shape future outreach efforts, refine service offerings, and expand partnerships to better support the people GKC serves. As she prepares to graduate with her Master’s in Public Health in May, Laura leaves behind a meaningful contribution which will continue to impact GKC’s mission.”
