HOME UPDATE
BIRTHDAYS – Obet celebrated his 15th birthday on the 3rd of May and he was given a gift voucher. Mapalo also celebrated her 11th birthday on the 26th of May, and she had a mini-birthday party. The birthday boy and girl are grateful for turning a year older.
SCHOOLS- All children reported for school in full spirit. Most of toddlers did well in their end of term tests; only Jane and Neila struggling with Math. Our teens did not do well in their end of term exams, but all had excuses of why they did not perform well. Linto in particular did not do very well, and in order to help him, we decided to look for an additional teacher because he is sitting for his 9th grade examinations in a few months. Most of them failed Math and Computer but all promised to do better in their performance. Gertrude reported for school at an institution in Lusaka where she is studying a degree in Education.
EXTRA ACTIVITY- Other than playtime, we have introduced gardening to the activities. The best-looking garden will be awarded every month with its group members. The kids were excited about it, especially because an award would be given. The children are planning to organize a Christmas concert and for this reason they are practicing Christmas songs.
VISITATIONS- As much as the parents and relatives of the children are encouraged to keep the bond with the children here at Kwathu, as this makes it easy during reintegration when children have reached 18 years old, some relatives only make promises that they do not fulfil and their whereabouts are unknown. It is sad to report that no parent came through or made effort this, only Theresa and Philip’s father made a call to one of the house mothers to find out how they are doing.
KWATHU SCHOOL REPORT:
The month of May is the second term of the school calendar in the year 2021. The first term of the year officially closed on April 23rd, 2021. The children went for a two-week holiday and resumed back to school on May 10th, 2021. Second term is a busy term as the students do a lot of various activities. In May, 98 percent of students have been reporting back.
Students on opening day
On May 14th, 2021, the school had inspectors from the Ministry of Education. The inspectors included the Education Standard Officers for general inspection and for open distance learning. The inspectors were checking if the school can continue to run or if it is even worthy to run. Fortunate enough, the inspection went well, and the school was recommended to be run in the following year. This was because the school met the required standards for the school to be operational.
Normal learning for classes resumed the second week of the terms school calendar. It has been interesting for the students to be back in school and they are ready for the term. They are filled with joy and happiness as they come to school daily.
CLINIC PROJECT- The clinic project is gradually heading towards completion. So far, the plastering and the floor have been done. This leaves us with only the electrical works, the door and window frames, and the painting. We are hoping to complete this project so that the children and the community around Kwathu Children’s Home can begin to access this much-needed medical care.
